bluemouth, inc.: How Soon Is Now?
“A visually and pyrotechnically astounding piece of work. Combining physical theatre, animation, electronic music and acrobatics, bluemouth inc. have created an impressively hyper-caffeinated spectacle — as remarkable, in its own low-budget way, as anything you might see in a Pixar movie or ILM special effects reel . . . more Bruckheimer than Brecht.” Paul Isaacs, EYE magazine, 2007

Horrifying things happen in abandoned buildings. Prisoners are locked away in isolation, interrogated and tortured. Sometimes people will witness all. In How Soon Is Now?, an alarmingly effective look at group hysteria and scapegoatism, the audience is drawn together to watch the capture and death of the big bad wolf. Using the tale of Peter and the Wolf as a point of departure, the piece explores the tension between the needs and desires of the individual versus the demands of society. A special theme underlying the show is the idea of suppressing violence with more violence.
How Soon Is Now? compares the mythic image of the wolf as fearsome creature to that of the discontented individual in civilized society. ? Equally inspired by Prokofiev’s much loved children’s tale Peter And The Wolf, and the 1931 German drama-thriller M directed by Fritz Lang, as well as Emir Kusturica’s 1995 film Underground, this new work, integrates elements of live music, multimedia, video, and text and choreography
Recognized for their striking site-specific work, bluemouth inc. transforms the newly renovated Irondale Center into a fully realized performance space. The audiences converges the play slowly, passing through several chambers until entering a grand hall where a triumphant mob strings the Wolf up on a pole and carries him off in a victory parade. The crowning moment is to be the beheading of the Wolf. Peter is given the choice to end the life of the violent and unpredictable Wolf. Will Peter let the axe fall?
How Soon is Now? will be performed by Cass Bugge, Stacie Morgain Lewis, Stephen O'Connell, Daniel Pettrow, Lucy Simic and Omar Zubair with an original musical score by Richard Windeyer and video design by Cameron Davis.
