The Irondale Ensemble Project is as close as we come these days to the Elizabethan acting companies that once presented Shakespeare’s plays to the Earl of Leicester, Sir Francis Drake and the Virgin Queen of England. ...What is on offer is the miracle of the word made flesh. I wish you joy in it.” —Lewis Lapham, editor of Lapham’s Quarterly

Student Matinee Performances

Student matinees at Irondale are wonderful field trips, offering the opportunity to see an off-Broadway play presented by a world-class ensemble in one of the area's most beautiful and historically important buildings.

This season’s productions, Shakespeare’s Henry V (November/December 2011) and In Pursuit of Freedom (April/May 2012), will dramatically bring to life moments of overwhelming historical importance and highlight their considerable contemporary relevance--offering endless classroom connections.

With Irondale's Henry V, your students can get a fresh look at one of Shakespeare’s most famous history plays. Set in an age of astounding military upsets and enduring conflict—the Hundred Years war between England and France—our production will take students through a dramatic period of history, while also inviting them to consider parallels in our own time. And we do it with just 9 actors in 100 minutes.

Irondale’s bold, innovative production In Pursuit of Freedom will allow students to step back into 1850s Brooklyn and enter the world of the local abolitionist and anti-slavery movement. They will meet the some Borough’s ordinary residents—black and white—and become deeply involved in the real stories of their struggle to bring change to our country. Field trips to visit our In Pursuit of Freedom partners, Brooklyn Historical Society and Weeksville Heritage Center, can also be arranged to deepen your students’ experiences.

Student matinee performances include a post-show Q&A with the cast and crew, as well as teacher resource guides. In-School workshops and residencies are also available for an additional fee.
