From the Vault: Outside The Law

The second event in our 2026/2027 Season!

On November 29, Irondale turns to its own history with the launch of From the Vault, a new series revisiting productions from across the company’s four decades and examining the work that shaped its theatrical voice.

The series begins with Outside the Law, an ensemble-devised work originally created in 1989 that smashes together two seemingly disparate stories: Rosalind’s journey in Shakespeare’s As You Like It and the legend of American folk hero and Depression-era outlaw Pretty Boy Floyd.

Moving between Shakespeare and American folklore, the piece became an early expression of the kind of theater Irondale was developing as an ensemble—pulling apart familiar stories, colliding different worlds and using that friction to look at American culture from an unexpected angle.

More than three decades later, Outside the Law returns as the first work Irondale has chosen to revisit through From the Vault.

• November 27–December 19: NextGen Inaugural Production
• November 29 at 7:30PM: From The Vault: Outside The Law - On your feet reading of an Irondale classic.
• December 13 at 7:30PM: The Writer's Room - Irondale artists and audiences discover new work together.
• December 20: Holiday Party & A Christmas Carol - A festive night of mulled wine, cookies, good company and a special adapted reading of A Christmas Carol | Party at 5PM Reading at 7PM
• January 29-February 5, 2027: The 1876 Project: Open Workshop - An early workshop of Irondale's newest ensemble production, inviting audiences into the room as the creation happens.
• April 20-May 16, 2027: The 1876 Project: Full Production - Irondale looks back at a country celebrating its centennial while grappling with division -and asks what stories America chooses to tell.
