It’s New Year's Eve. The rules are loosening. The boundaries between upstairs and downstairs are beginning to blur.
Over the course of one charged night, Julie, Jean, and Christine enter a dangerous game of desire, ambition, seduction, and control. Each believes they understand the rules. Each believes they know where the power lies.
Until it shifts.
Nearly 140 years after August Strindberg scandalized audiences with Miss Julie, director and adapter Emilio Maxwell Cerci returns to the play to ask what has and hasn’t changed. In this new adaptation, Strindberg’s battle across class and gender becomes an examination of the forces that still determine who gets to hold power, who is protected by it, and what happens when someone tries to cross the boundaries designed to keep them in their place.
Wealth. Gender. Sexuality. Social status. Surveillance. Desire. Each gives the characters a certain kind of power—and each can become a weapon.
But on this New Year's Eve, no one is entirely in control.
The production spills beyond the boundaries of a traditional stage, making full use of The Space at Irondale and drawing the audience into the atmosphere of the celebration.
As the night unfolds, Irondale itself becomes part of the world of the play. And the audience may find that watching from the outside isn’t quite an option.

Miss Julie is the inaugural production of Irondale NextGen, a new artistic initiative creating opportunities for a new generation of directors, performers, and theater makers within the Irondale community to develop and lead projects of their own.
